Torn ACL: Can You Still Walk?

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tear — Can You Walk?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a key ligament that helps stabilize the knee joint, especially during twisting motions or sudden changes in direction. Many people wonder whether they can still walk normally after tearing this ligament. The answer is that most patients can still walk on flat ground, since ordinary walking doesn’t place much rotational force on the knee. Problems become noticeable, however, when walking fast, running, jumping, or changing direction quickly — the knee may feel loose, unstable, or give way (often called a “buckling knee”).

If left untreated, an unstable knee joint can lead to repeated injury to the meniscus and joint cartilage, increasing the risk of early-onset osteoarthritis. Treatment approach depends on the patient’s activity level. Those who don’t place heavy demands on the knee may be treated with physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the joint, while those who play sports or use the knee intensively are usually advised to undergo ACL reconstruction surgery.

If you suspect your knee feels loose or gives way frequently after twisting movements, consult a knee specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment planning.
