Shoulder Pain: Torn Tendon or Frozen Shoulder?

Shoulder Pain_ Torn Tendon or Frozen Shoulder_

Shoulder pain is a common problem, but two very different causes are often confused: a torn rotator cuff and frozen shoulder. These can generally be told apart by their symptoms. People with a rotator cuff tear usually experience sudden pain after lifting something heavy or after a fall, and feel weakness when raising the arm — especially overhead — but can still move the shoulder through its full range of motion if someone helps support the arm.

Frozen shoulder, on the other hand, tends to develop gradually. It’s common in people with diabetes or those who haven’t moved their shoulder much after a minor injury. Its hallmark feature is limited range of motion in every direction — even with assistance, the joint remains very stiff and tight. These two conditions require completely different treatment. Some rotator cuff tears require surgical repair, while frozen shoulder is usually treated mainly with physical therapy and anti-inflammatory injections.

Don’t let chronic shoulder pain go undiagnosed — see a shoulder specialist for an accurate diagnosis.
