What Causes Knee Pain When Going Up and Down Stairs?

Knee pain that occurs specifically when going up or down stairs is common among office workers and working-age adults. One of the main causes is Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), which occurs when pressure on the cartilage behind the kneecap increases significantly when the knee bends while bearing weight. The pressure can be particularly high when going downstairs, when the knee may experience forces equivalent to 3–4 times the body weight.

Common risk factors include weak quadriceps muscles, slight misalignment of the kneecap, and age-related cartilage thinning. If left untreated, the condition may contribute to the development of knee osteoarthritis. Initial treatment focuses on strengthening the thigh muscles, improving knee movement and posture, and avoiding unnecessarily deep knee bending.

If knee pain when going up or down stairs persists for more than 2 weeks, you should consult a knee specialist for a thorough evaluation.
